The results of Using Group Counseling Program to Enhance Academic Grit of Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of a group counseling program on enhancing academic grit among students at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University and to explore students’ psychological experiences after participation in the program. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The participants consisted of 16 undergraduate students selected through purposive sampling from those whose academic grit scores were below the 25th percentile. The participants were randomly assigned into an experimental group and a control group, with eight students in each group. The research instruments included the Academic Grit Scale, an 11- session group counseling program, and a semi-structured interview. Quantitative data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and independent sample t-test, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic synthesis based on Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory. The results revealed that students in the experimental group who participated in the group counseling program demonstrated significant higher levels of academic grit than those in the control group at the 0.1 level. In addition, the analysis of students’ psychological experiences indicates that the development of grit occurred through experiential learning processes. Passion was fostered through self-exploration, meaning-making toward academic goals, and intrinsic motivation, whereas perseverance was strengthened through learning from mistakes, continuous skill practice, and persistent engagement with academic challenges. Overall, the findings suggest that group counseling serves as an effective mechanism for enhancing academic grit among undergraduates’ students in higher education.
