The way of success of slum people

Abstract

This research article is part of the dissertation, the Opportunities Seeking and life Expectations Slum people in Thailand. The objectives were 1) to study the factors related to opportunities seeking and life expectations of people living in slums in Bangkok; 2) to study the process of Opportunities seeking model for success in the life of people living in slums in Bangkok. This mixed methods research combined quantitative research from samples of 400 people and qualitative research from 20 key informants. The qualitative data included descriptive statistics expressed as a percentage, means, standard deviation, and multiple regression correlation coefficient statistics. The qualitative data used descriptions with a focus on social phenomena, based on the concepts of content analysis.

             The results indicated that economic capital, social capital, symbolic capital, cultural capital, learning, and Buddhist principles are related to the pursuit of opportunities and the life expectation of people living in the slums. with statistical significance at a level of less than 0.05 with predictive power or predicting dependent variables 84.6 % (R² = 0.846).

             For the model of opportunities seeking for success in the lives of people living in slums in Bangkok, it was found that opportunities seeking through internal factors, namely empowering, knowledge, framework, and taking action, as well as relying on external factors, which were financial capital, family, government policy, and networking. The process of success started by bringing these factors together. After that, the individuals then set clear goals, plan, implement the plans, and solve problems that arise until the individuals find their success.
