ECONOMIC SELF-RELIANCE OF COMMUNITIES IN SAEN PAN SUB-DISTRICT, THAT PHANOM DISTRICT, NAKHON PHANOM PROVINCE

Abstract

The objectives of this study consisted of: i) to study the economic self-reliance of communities in Saen Pan Sub-district, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province; ii) to study the factors affecting the economic self-reliance of communities in Saen Pan Sub-district, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province; and iii) to analyze Economic system related to self-reliance of communities in Saen Pan Sub-district, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province. The qualitative research was conducted in this study. The sample group comprised 16 local administrators and people involved. The research tool was an in-depth interview and content analysis was employed for data analysis.

The results of the research were concluded as follows:

1. Economic self-reliance of communities in Saen Phan Sub-district, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province consisted of 5 aspects, namely local wisdom and local technology, economics, natural resources and environmental, psychological, and social and cultural aspects. There is a central gathering in solving the problems of the sub-district. A sub-district learning center was established as a source of wisdom. Three working groups were set up: farmers group, occupation group and savings group. There are 5 operational characteristics: joint ownership, joint decision making, shared resource management, common identity, and common goals.
2. There are two types of factors affecting the economic self-reliance of communities in Saen Pan Sub-district, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province: external factors, namely government policies, the promotion of external agencies and cooperation of external networks and internal factors such as leadership of community leaders, development plans and strategies community activities and community participation.
3. The economic system related to the self-reliance of communities in Saen Phan Sub-district, That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province, was analyzed by using the TERMS Model system revealed that there are good economy, sufficient natural resources, strong spirit ready to work in all areas, and unity of society and culture.
