TEXTILES WITH HANG KRA-ROK PATTERN: BODY OF KNOWLEDGE AND VALUES FROM SHORT STORY BY CHAMLONG FANGCHONLACHIT AND FROM KOH YOR COMMUNITY IN SONGKHLA PROVINCE

Abstract

This article aims to study grasps and values of Hang Kra Rok weaving pattern from Chamlong Fangcholjitr's short stories and Koh Yor community Songkhla province in three aspects i.e. 1) grasps and values of Hang Kra Rok pattern from the short story 2) knowledge and virtues of Hang Kra Rok pattern from the community and 3) grasps and values integration of Hang Kra Rok pattern from the short story and Koh Yor community. This study is considered qualitative research by key informants i.e. weavers, community experts and the author of the short story. Instruments used in this research were observation, interview form and group discussion. The information was interpreted, categorised and analysed into three aspects which are 1) knowledge and value of Hang Kra Rok weaving pattern from the short story which has been inherited for at least three generations and able to accumulate the weaving wisdom of the south 2) gist and worth of Hang Kra Rok pattern from the community has been shaped from the relation of weavers’ wisdom with local resources and 3) the integration of knowledge and values of the weaving pattern from short stories and the community from interview, group discussion with experts and weavers. Weavers had taken from sailing through the island and noticing hydrilla in Songkhla Lake as an inspiration for designing and tracing a new pattern named “Hang Kra Rok” which has affected the community conversation about other traditional weaving patterns, making the community's discussion about textiles more meaningful.
