ENGLISH FOR BUDDHIST DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

This article aims to study and analyze the role of English in Buddhism, particularly in the context of developing English language skills as an essential tool for disseminating Buddhism and conducting Buddhist studies on an international level. The study focuses on exploring research related to the development of English proficiency among Buddhist students and scholars in Thailand, along with case studies from other countries, to provide an overview of the use of English in spreading Buddhism in various contexts. The analysis of these case studies highlights the successes, challenges, and best practices in using English to communicate Buddhist teachings globally. The article presents approaches to enhancing English proficiency through religious activities, such as Dhamma discussions in English, translating scriptures and chants, writing academic papers on Buddhism in English, and organizing training or meditation retreats for foreign participants. This fosters a deeper understanding of Buddhist teachings through learning and communication. The findings indicate that developing English language skills in the Buddhist community enhances confidence in effectively communicating and disseminating Dhamma internationally, facilitating greater access to global Buddhist knowledge and networks. This, in turn, leads to valuable knowledge exchange and experiences. The article concludes that promoting English language development within the Buddhist community is essential in the era of globalization and recommends integrating English education into Buddhist curricula in various institutions, as well as encouraging activities and projects that provide opportunities for continuous practice of English in a Buddhist context.
