THE APPROACHES TO ENHANCE SOCIAL COHESION IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the approaches to enhance social cohesion among students in Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, as perceived by the staff and advisor. This qualitative research had 31 key informants, which consists of 7 university administrators,
16 faculty - level administrators of Student Affairs, and 8 advisors. Data was collected through in - depth, semi - structured interviews. The data underwent analysis using content analysis techniques and theoretical notions. The research findings demonstrate that there are essential approaches to improve social cohesion among learners at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, including:
1) curriculum content that promotes interaction, interdependence, awareness, and respect for others; 2) classroom and extracurricular activities that foster networks and social capital; 3) the university's distinctive culture that upholds shared values and norms, thereby uniting its members. 4) equitable student services provide trust and a sense of belonging; 5) cultivating a social environment that cohabits individuals from different backgrounds facilitates their adjustment, acceptance, and respect for those who are different from them. This research advises higher education institutions to adopt these approaches by meticulously applying and incorporating them into their plans, strategies, and operations. This strategy must include all students from every academic year, emphasizing the support and management of cultural diversity. Moreover, the university ought to incorporate additional balanced activities that promote diversity, particularly among student leaders. They ought to foster cultural leadership competencies.
