INNOVATION IN COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGERS IN PRIVATE COMPANIES WITHIN BANGKOK

Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) Examine the current states, problems, and needs for competency development among construction project managers in private companies within Bangkok; and 2) Design an innovation for such competency development. A mixed-methods research design was employed. Quantitative data were collected via questionnaires from a sample of 400 participants and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were gathered through purposive in-depth interviews with 18 key informants, while the innovation was validated through a focus group discussion with 10 experts. Furthermore, the quantitative phase focused on analyzing the Point of Difference (PoD) to identify unique skills within the Bangkok context, coupled with the Sandbox Analysis concept to design an innovative experimental space. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that the current states and core problems included competency gaps in systemic holistic vision, heavy workloads, and adherence to traditional mindsets. Consequently, the researcher designed an innovative Web Application system named “SITE DOCUMENT (SD)” as the primary mechanism for competency and operational development. The system features a User Hierarchy structure that systematically connects roles-ranging from site engineers and project managers to relevant stakeholders-to a centralized database, covering the entire construction project lifecycle from pre-construction to post-construction phases. Additionally, the system integrates project progress reporting, quality control (QA/QC), and on-site monitoring technologies (CCTV/Drone) to process data into a real-time dashboard. This integration effectively reduces communication gaps and enhances precision in strategic decision-making. Finally, the experts from the focus group confirmed that the SITE DOCUMENT (SD) system innovation possesses high appropriateness and feasibility for practical implementation to sustainably elevate competitive advantages.
