A STUDY OF THE MÜLAKAMMATHÃNA IMPORTANCE IN KAYAKATASATI SUTTA

Abstract

     The objectives of this research article were to: 1) study the doctrines and importance of the Mulakammathana in Buddhism, and 2) study the application of Mulakammathana in Kayakati Sutta as the based practice for the cultivation of Samatha (tranquility meditation) and Vipassana (insight mediation) meditation. This study was conducted based on Documentary Research Methodology and descriptive analysis.

     The result of the study found that the doctrines and importance of the Mulakammathana is another method of Dhamma practice in the 40 Kammathana which is in the group of Anussati kammathana. The Kayakatasati Kammathana is the Kammathana which the Buddha taught to Bhikkhus Bhikkhunis, Upasakas and Upasikas. The foundation of meditation is to use mindfulness to consider the hair, nails, teeth, skin in the human body that are disgusting, impermanent and obsessed. The preceptor will teach the new ordained monks as primary monks.

     To use Mulakammathana in Kayakatasati as a base for cultivating Samatha and Vipassana. The preceptor will tell the new monk to consider the hair, nails, teeth, skin in the human body that there is impermanent change. It will be able to concentrate and see things that are impermanent.
