Characteristics of Cooperative Managers and The Efficiency In Operating a Savings and Credit Cooperative: a Case Study of a University's Savings and Credit Cooperative

Abstract

This article aimed to study (1) explore and analyze the characteristics of cooperative managers that affect the efficiency of savings cooperative management, and (2) examine the satisfaction with state regulatory measures and their impact on the business performance of savings cooperatives. It is a mixed-method research, employing quantitative research through the collection of data via questionnaires, and qualitative research using semi-structured interviews. The population for the study consists of savings cooperatives in universities across the country, totaling 46 cooperatives. The study found that the desirable characteristics of cooperative managers include having knowledge in the field of cooperatives, the ability to plan and set policies that align with the changing social conditions, leadership qualities, effective communication skills, an openness to others' opinions, the ability to efficiently solve immediate problems, patience and self-sacrifice, honesty and integrity, a commitment to supporting staff development within the organization, and proficient use of technology. Regarding satisfaction with the state's regulatory measures, it was found that overall there is a moderate level of satisfaction. The majority believe that the state's regulatory measures help build confidence among members. However, there are divergent opinions about the policy regarding the age limit for managers at the end of their contracts, which may not align with the context of Thai society that is moving towards an aging society. Furthermore, the knowledge and skills of cooperative managers are developed through the accumulation of experience in cooperative work, which could lead to a shortage of knowledgeable and skilled personnel in the cooperatives.
