Effects of Using the OK5R Teaching Method on the Reading Comprehension Ability of First Year Secondary School Students

Abstract

This research aimed to compare the reading comprehension abilities of First Year Secondary School Students before and after implementing the OK5R Teaching Method. The study employed a pre-experimental design, specifically the One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample group consisted of 40 students who enrolled in Class 1/4 in the Taweethapisek Bangkhunthian School by using a purposive sampling method. The research instrument used for data collection included a multiple-choice reading comprehension test with 40 items, each having four answer choices. The test had content validity between 0.67 - 1.00, reliability as 0.79, difficulty as 0.28 - 0.80, and discrimination index between 0.21 - 0.70. The experimental instruments consisted of 9 lesson plans developed based on the OK5R Teaching Method. Each lesson plan was designed for a 55-minutes teaching session. These lesson plans were evaluated and found to be highly appropriate, achieving an average quality score of 4.73. Additionally, the results were analyzed to check statistical significance by using t-test. The finding showed that the students' reading comprehension ability after receiving the OK5R teaching method was higher than prior to the experiment at the 0.05 level of significance.
