Competency and continuing professional development in accounting have an impact on the career success of accountants in Bangkok

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) examine how competencies influence the career success of accountants in Bangkok, and (2) investigate how continuing professional development (CPD) in accounting affects the career success of accountants in Bangkok. This study employed quantitative research methods. The research instrument was a rating-scale questionnaire that had undergone content validity and reliability testing. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation), and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that (1) overall, the competencies of accountants were rated at the highest level, with professional values and attitudes scoring the highest, followed by communication, creativity, and analytical problem-solving skills. These competencies positively influenced career success, particularly creativity and analytical problem-solving skills, which showed significant impacts. (2) CPD in accounting was also rated at the highest level, especially in technological proficiency and professional skills, both of which demonstrated significant positive effects on career success. (3) Competencies and CPD in accounting could explain 69.8% of the variance in goal achievement and 65.1% of the variance in career advancement among accountants in Bangkok. These results indicate that both competencies and ongoing professional development are crucial factors contributing to career success in the accounting profession.
