The Effectiveness of Types of Teaching Aids in Malay Language Instruction: A Systematic Literature Review for The Period 2023-2024

Abstract

This study is a systematic literature review conducted for the period of 2023-2024 with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of various types of teaching aids (BBM) used in the teaching of the Malay language based on previous research. A total of seven studies were analysed, comprising one study involving primary school pupils, three studies involving secondary school students, one study involving university students and two studies involving teachers. The findings reveal that for primary school pupils, the use of KOMSAS-based materials enhances text comprehension, critical thinking and interest in reading. For secondary school students, gamification and information technology have proven effective in increasing motivation, focus and active engagement during learning. At the university level, e-gamification improves conceptual understanding, self-directed learning skills, and online interaction. Meanwhile, for teachers, the use of i-Think mind maps supports more systematic, creative and well-structured lesson planning. Overall, technology-based teaching aids emerge as the most dominant and highly promising trend in the teaching of the Malay language. This review can serve as a reference for selecting appropriate teaching aids according to the needs and learning levels of different learner groups
