TROMBONE SECTION IN SAMMY NESTICO’S BIG BAND COMPOSITIONS

Abstract

The objectives of this research focus on an investigation of trombone playing styles in a big band setting, balancing the sounds within the trombone section, and trombone playing techniques. In order to collect data, two compositions from Sammy Nestico which were 88 Basie Street and Wind Machine were selected. The data were analyzed using the records from The Legacy of Sammy Nestico performed by The United States Army Field Band and Basie Cally Sammy performed by The South West Radio Big Band. Both records are under the conducting of Sammy Nestico. even Sammy Nestico was the composer and conductor for both works, the musical interpretation and the performing styles from both bands were different. The performance from each band reflected their stylistic identity. This analysis was a small part reflecting the ability of trombone players who could utilize unique techniques to create musical beauty.
