The Development of English Reading Comprehension Ability Using SCROL Strategic of The First Year Vocational Certificate Students Level in Commercial Program at A Technical College in Sakon Nakhon province

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study and compare student’s English reading comprehension ability before and after using SCROL Strategy of The First Year Vocational Certificate Students Level in Commercial Program at a technical college in Sakon Nakhon  province and to study the students’ attitude towards teaching English reading comprehension using SCROL Strategy. The sample consisted of 40 students studying in Vocational Certificate Level of Marketing Department in Commercial Program in the first year semester of the academic year 2019 at a technical college in Sakon Nakhon, using cluster random sampling. The design of this research was a one group pretest- posttest design. Research instruments were : 1) 12 lesson plans,  2)  an English reading comprehension ability test and 3) an attitude questionnaire. The experiment lasted 12 weeks, 2 hours a week. Data analysis employed  mean, percentage,  standard  deviation,  one sample t-test and t-test for dependent samples.  The findings of the research were as follows: 1) the students’ pretest and posttest mean scores of English reading comprehension ability were 17.28 or 43.19 percent and 31.18 or 77.94 percent respectively. The student’s posttest mean score was higher than the criteria of 70 percent and significantly higher than that of the pretest at the 0.01 level; and 2) the students’ attitude towards teaching English reading comprehension using SCROL strategy reading was at a good level.
