Abstract

The objective of this research article is to present results of an analysis of stylistic attributes in sentences with onomatopoeic words in children’s book series authored by Tuppong. Data were collected from two types of data sources: descriptive sentences and conversational sentences. Four hundred and sixty-six (466) descriptive sentences with onomatopoeic words and 164 conversational sentences with onomatopoeic words were found. These sentences were analyzed based on a concept of language styles. Two characteristics of stylistic attributes were found: simple and attractive. “Simple” refers to features of sentences expressed using short information units, avoiding the use of pronouns, but clear and unambiguous. “Attractive” refers to features of sentences used in conversations, verbal language and imitating various natural sounds to add aesthetic quality to the story. These sentences function as language models for children as they are easy to understand because of the use of familiar words that are around them. Conversations help children to think and respond to the characters, and to be imaginative. Thus, learning from words that imitate various natural sounds is one method of language development for children.
