Community Participation in Solid Waste Management of Ban Na Fai, Na Fai Sub-district, Mueang District, Chaiyaphum Province

Abstract

            The objectives of the research entitled “Community participation in solid waste management of Ban Na Fai, Na Fai Sub-district, Mueang District, Chaiyaphum Province are 1) to study the situations of wastes and solid waste management of the community and 2) to study the participation of the community in solid waste management in the community. The population included the people living in Baan Na Fai Community, Na Fai Sub-district, Mueang District, Chaiyaphum Province. The samples consisted of 320 people. The reliability was set at 95%. The research instrument was a questionnaire. The statistics used in data analysis were number, percentage, mean and standard deviation.

          The result finds as following:
          Regarding the situations of waste and solid waste management of the community, most of the respondents (87.10%) recognized that there was the problem of waste in the community, and 66.30% of them agreed that the household wastes were plastic bags or plastic bottles. Moreover, 72.30% of the respondents agreed that the community wastes were plastic bags or plastic bottles. In addition, 55.40% recognized that the households did not sort waste before discarding. Also, 35.60% responded that the frequency of waste collection in the community was once a week, and 28.70% reported that the period of waste collection was in the morning. Furthermore, 56.40% responded that the method of waste disposal was to throw in the trash. Finally, 59.4% agreed that the impact of waste in the community was bad smell. For the community participation in community waste management, it was found that the overall participation in community waste management in Ban Na Fai, Na Fai Sub-district, Mueang District, Chaiyaphum Province was in the highest level with an average of 3.29 (S.D. = 0.68). The highest mean was found in participation in receiving, benefits with an average of 3.35 (S.D. = 0.69), followed by participation in monitoring and evaluation and participation in operations with an average of 3.31 (S.D. = 0.67), and participation in thinking and decision made with an average of 3.19 (S.D. = 0.72) respectively.
