An Application of Kataññūkatavedī to the Traditions of the Way of Life of Sungai Pattani Community, Kuala Muda District, Kedah State, Malaysia

Abstract

          The purpose of this research were: 1) to study the concept of traditions and way of life of Su-ngai Pattani community, Kuala Muda District, Kedah State, Malaysia, 2) to study the Kataññūkatavedī (In remembrance of the benefactor and his reciprocity) in the Buddhist scriptures; and 3) to apply Kataññūkatavedī in the traditions and way of life of the Su-ngai Pattani community, Kuala Muda District, Kedah State, Malaysia. It is qualitative research, focuses on document studies and in-depth interviews.
          The research results found that:
          1. The concept of traditions and way of life of Su-ngai Pattani community, Kuala Muda District, Kedah State, Malaysia. There is a system of social culture that has been passed down from ancestors to respond human needs until becoming a cultural tradition and identity of the community.
          2. The Kataññūkatavedī in the Buddhist scriptures. It found that the Kataññūkatavedī is the basic virtue of a person. It is the appreciation of those who have mercy and express that grace in return for both physical and mental happiness.
          3. An Application of Kataññūkatavedī in the traditions and way of life of the Su-ngai Pattani community, Kuala Muda District, Kedah State, Malaysia. It found that the Kataññūkatavedī is an important moral principle of human beings. It can be applied in the traditions and way of life of the Su-ngai Pattani community, Kuala Muda District, Kedah State, Malaysia to solve 5 parts, namely, information about traditions, learning traditions, conservation and inheritance, value of tradition and the interests of youth from the application, it creates unity of the community in organizing Loi Krathong, Songkran and the Festival of the Tenth Lunar Month resulting in peaceful coexistence in the community.
