An Analytical Study of The Role of King Sakka on Buddhism

Abstract

             The purpose of this research were: 1) to study the concept of belief in deities (Devatã), 2) to study the history of King Sakka that appears in the Buddhist scriptures, and 3) to analyze the role of King Sakka on Buddhism. It is qualitative research, focuses on document studies.
             The research result found that:
             1. The belief in deities in most Buddhist societies accepts the existence of deities. who thought that he would follow up and protect those who practiced well or good people all the time until there is a saying that blesses each other that "Boonraksa, guardian angel"
            2. The history of King Sakka that appears in Buddhist scriptures, he was born as a human being, living in the village of Ajalakama, Magadha, named Magha, and most people called Makhamanop. He behaved like the behavior of a Bodhisattva. He likes to perform public welfare, making various places pleasant and pleasant to live in and doing for the benefit of others.
             3. An Analyze the role of King Sakka on Buddhism. It found that 1) the role as Patron of the Buddha, 2) the roles as helpers for monks, nuns and novices, 3) the role as the helper of layman and laywomen, and 4) the role as the protector of Buddhism.
