BHIKKHUNI THE FORGOTTEN BUDDHIST COMPANY: AN ANALYSIS OF THE EMERGENCE OF BHIKKHUNI

Abstract

This article aimed at study the history of Bhikkhuni continuity or loss and to present a solution to the treatment of Buddhism for Bhikkhunies. The results of the study showed that 1. A Bhikkhuni is a woman who has been ordained as a nun by both Sangha, that is, a Bhikkhuni and a Monk. The Bhikkunies observe 311 precepts which is a strict practice for Bhikkhunies. The Mahayana Sangha, there is no limit. can be ordained from monks and Bhikkhuni but the Theravada side does not certify the status of continuity or succession, causing this Bhikkhuni Sangha to be absent since the Buddha's time. 2. There is no recognition of the status of a nun, that is, the Bhikkhunis can be ordained in Buddhism in the context of Thai society. 3. The only way to become a Bhikkuni is to go to ordain in a foreign country only and then come back to Thailand, to be ordained as an "Anakarik" nun with hair shaved, white clothes. which are not few in Thailand.  This way may be a solution for transgender women who want to practice until they can attain enlightenment. The Bhikkhunis themselves have to do the duty of proclaiming Buddhism in depth in Thailand in order to show the point of disseminating the teachings of the Buddha.
