MANAGEMENT EFFICIENCY OF BUDDHISM TEACHING AND LEARNING IN SCHOOL MORALITY TEACHING MONKS AT DON MUANG DISTRICT, BANGKOK

Abstract

Objectives of this research article were: 1. to examine the level of Buddhist education management by monk teachers in schools within Don Mueang District, Bangkok, 2. to investigate the factors influencing such educational management and, 3. to propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of Buddhist instruction conducted by monk teachers. A mixed-methods approach was employed. The quantitative component involved a survey of 255 lower secondary school students from Wat Weluwanaram School and Prachauthit School using a questionnaire with an overall reliability coefficient of 0.944. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression analysis. The qualitative component consisted of in-depth interviews with 10 key informants and data analysis using content analysis techniques.

The findings revealed that: 1. students rated the overall quality of Buddhist education management by monk teachers at a high level, 2. Factors influencing the effectiveness of instructional management revealed that personnel was the most influential factor (Beta=0.129), while teaching techniques, assessment, and evaluation had low or statistically insignificant effects. In terms of the Four Iddhipada (Bases of Success), Viriya (perseverance) emerged as the strongest predictor (Beta=0.307), followed by Vimamsa (inquiry) and Citta (concentration). Chanda (interest or satisfaction), however, showed a slightly negative influence (Beta=-0.169). 3. The study suggests that integrating modern learning theories with core Buddhist principles particularly the Four Iddhipadas can systematically enhance the effectiveness of Buddhist education. Appropriate instructional media, conducive learning environments, and content relevant to students’ daily lives help foster desirable student attributes, such as interest or satisfaction (Chanda), perseverance (Viriya), concentration (Citta), and inquiry (Vimamsa). This integrated approach can promote deep, sustainable learning that aligns with the needs and contexts of today’s youth.
