Abstract

This research aimed to research and develop the counseling skills strengthening program for elementary school teachers, Northern Thailand. The research was divided into 3 phases. The first phase comprised a need assessment research model to study the needs for counseling skills development among elementary school teachers. The second phase employed the research and development model to develop the program. Lastly, a quasi-experimental research model was conducted together with follow-up for the practical application in order to study the effectiveness of the program. The results revealed that the counseling skills, such as unconditional positive regards skills, accessibility skills, basic counseling skills, the skills for reinforcement and appropriate behavior control, and effective communication skills has been assessed to be consistent with the needs of the elementary school teachers at the high to the highest levels. In terms of the development and effectiveness testing of the program, the results showed that the counseling skill strengthening program was able to increase counseling skills among the participants and they believed that they had counseling skills with a statistical significance at the level of .05. The result was also found that at least 80% of the participants believed that they had knowledge and understood and were confident that they would be able to use what they had learned.
