A Transcription System of Standard Chinese from Pinyin into Thai Alphabets: Suggestions for Teaching Chinese in Thailand

Abstract
The objective of this research is to propose a transcription system of Standard Chinese from Pinyin into Thai alphabets, anticipating that it can be pronounced similarly to the source language. The main concept is that all Pinyins represent phonemes, each phoneme has its allophone; if these allophones are transcribed, it must yield sounds similar to the source language. The results reveal that Standard Chinese has 3 kinds of phonemes, namely, consonants, vowels, and tones; each phoneme has its allophone, some phonemes have many allophones. Most of the allophones can be transcribed into Thai alphabets, but the allophones of the phonemes represented by h, x, z, c, zh, ch, sh, r and ü have to be transcribed into Thai alphabets with diacritics since there are not these allophones in Standard Thai.
