Writing Strategies and Occurrences in Abbreviation and Acronym of the Business Vocabulary in Vietnamese Online Newspapers

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the writing strategies of business vocabulary abbreviations and acronyms in Vietnamese online newspapers. It also aimed to examine the occurrences of business vocabulary abbreviations and acronyms in Vietnamese online newspapers from the website https://vnexpress.net/ in a total of 80 issues. The results showed that 208 abbreviated and acronym words were found, of which 42 were Vietnamese words, and the combination of Vietnamese and English words accounted for five words. The rest were the English abbreviation and acronym words. Most abbreviations and acronyms were about finance, currency, measurement units, titles, and ranks of specific agencies, organizations, and companies. There are four structures for making abbreviations and acronyms: 1) using the first letter of each syllable or a syllable, 2) using more than one first syllabus, 3) using the first two mentioned structures with words, and 4) using the combination of syllabus and syllabus. There were three types of occurrences in abbreviation and acronym of the business vocabulary in Vietnamese online newspapers, which are: 1) abbreviation and acronym occurring in parenthesis after the full word; 2) abbreviation and acronym occurring after the full word was already mentioned; and 3) abbreviation and acronym occurring alone without the use of full words before.
