Abstract

Stop consonants in American English can be realized as many allophones, depending on which phonological contexts they occur. In this paper, statements or rules describing the allophones of stop consonants in American accent are compiled from many textbooks. There are 11 rules stated in the textbooks. In addition, the author adds one more rule which has not been mentioned before; it makes 12 rules of allophones altogether. In some contexts Thai allophones can be used, but in many contexts Thai lacks those allophones. It is expected that these rules of allophones of stop consonants can benefit Thai students who are learning the American accent
