The Belief of Phra Raung in Thai Society: The Role and Existence

Abstract

This research aims to study the development in the belief of Phra raung, one of historical, cultural Thai heros. It focuses on the study of the role and existence of the belief in Thai society. He reflects the interactions that affect the social and cultural life. The information collected from the beliefs in Phra Raung, written in history, and the narrative of the poetry found in the lower northern region. The study indicated that the belief in Phra Raung has evolved from historical narrative or semi-narrative. Then it inspires the creation of many more local oral legends. Phra Raung has a role on both a legendary person and a city legend. It also has role on Behavior and ethics. It has artistic role which has inspired the creation of various arts. The belief in Phra Ruang is a consciousness about the heroic importance that exists in the form of the name of the city, historical landmarks and environment to be a spiritual anchor of the people and the community. It also benefits the management of the area and the community to support the idea of creative economy.
