A Study of Negative Transfers Regarding Orthography Affecting the Pronunciation of the Glide /j/ Delivered by Burapha University Undergraduates in French Programme Based on the Common European Framework of References for Languages at the A1 and A2 Levels

Abstract
This study aims at 1) comparing the problems about the pronunciation of the glide /j/ from oral reading and imitation; and 2) examining the negative transfer of French orthography that affects the pronunciation of the glide /j/ delivered by Thai university students learning French as a foreign language at the A1 and A2 levels according to the CEFR framework. The data on the glide /j/ pronunciation were collected from 40 first-year and second-year undergraduates. Two types of tests, oral reading and imitation, were used in this experiment. Based on the analysis of 1,600 sounds recorded using Praat, it was found that the deep orthography in French had a direct impact on the pronunciation of the glide /j/. The four errors found included 1) a substitution of /j/ with other sounds, 2) no release of /j/ in final consonant sound, 3) a deletion of the /j/, and 4) no semi-consonantization of /i/ to /j/. The results indicated that the participants at both A1 and A2 levels made more errors in pronouncing the glide /j/ in the oral reading test than in the imitation test.
