Weaving as Depicted in Local Literature from the Four Regions: A Case Study of Legends and Folktales

Abstract

This research aims to explore and study the content related to the appearance of weaving in local literature from the four regions of Thailand: a case study of legends and folktales. The findings reveal that individuals who take on the role of weaving include daughters, daughters-in-law, wives, and young women who are portrayed as sacred or divine beings. The cultural practices related to weaving can be categorized into five aspects. First, the purposes of weaving include weaving for daily use, weaving as an expression of gratitude toward one’s parents, and weaving as an offering to Phra Sri Ariya Metteyya. Second, the tools and equipment used in weaving consist of looms, shuttles, bobbins, and spindles or stick shuttles. Third, the fibers used in weaving are primarily cotton and silk. Fourth, there is an emphasis on the creation of patterns in woven fabrics. Fifth, the practice of weaving occurs during both daytime and nighttime. The study of weaving as depicted in local literature from the four regions, through the case study of legends and folktales, reveals not only the content embedded in these traditional narratives but also the beliefs, values, and cultural thinking passed down through generations of villagers.
