Conceptual Metaphors of the Emotion of Hate among Thai Social Media Users

Abstract
This research aimed to analyze the types and mapping processes of conceptual metaphors used to express the emotion of hate in the Thai language. Data were collected from the online platform Twitter/X and Pantip.com, comprising 1,967 messages, and were analyzed using a cognitive linguistics approach. The results revealed nine types of conceptual metaphors, with the three most frequent being [HATRED IS AN OBJECT], [HATRED IS A LIVING BEING], and [HATRED IS WATER]. These nine concepts could be organized into four core thematic groups: External Forces, Internal States, Structures and Actions, and Moral Impurity. The analysis indicated that Thai speakers conceptualized hate as a dangerous state-an object that imposed a burden, a living being that can grow and act independently, and a natural force that was difficult to control. In comparison with other research, it was found that metaphors of the emotion of hate shared a conceptual system with metaphors of other negative emotions but were distinguished as representing a more serious and intense emotion. In conclusion, this research demonstrated that metaphors were not merely a rhetorical device, but a key cognitive mechanism that reflected the complex conceptual system of Thai speakers in constructing meanings for the emotion of hate.
