Abstract

This study aimed to examine health perception (Health Belief Model-HBM), health literacy, and health behaviors related to self-protection against PM2.5 haze, and the relationships among these three factors among residents in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, and Luang Prabang Province, Lao PDR. A quantitative research methodology was employed using a questionnaire as the research instrument. Data were collected from a total of 400 participants, with 200 respondents from each of the study areas in Thailand and the Lao PDR. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including t-test, One-way Analysis of Variance (One-way ANOVA), and Pearson Correlation analysis. The research findings revealed that participants from both areas had high levels of overall health perception, but moderate levels of overall health literacy and health behaviors. The relationships between health perception and health literacy, and their association with health behavior, varied by area. In Thailand, health perception variables were correlated with health literacy variables at a low level, and health literacy had positive correlations with health behaviors at a moderate level. Meanwhile, in Lao PDR, health perception variables had low positive correlations with health literacy, and both factors had positive correlations with health behaviors at a moderate level.
