Common Errors in the Use of French Adverbs by Students majoring in French for Communication at Burapha University

Abstract
This research aimed to examine errors in French adverb usage among students majoring in French for Communication at Burapha University. Data were collected from 124 writing assignments, totaling 875 sentences, produced by 31 students enrolled in the course 22633664 Paragraph Writing in French. The findings revealed eight categories of adverbial errors across 120 sentences: 1) spelling; 2) adverb placement within a sentence; 3) the use of adverbs in place of adjectives; 4) the use of adverbial quantifiers to modify nouns or noun phrases; 5) the use of comparative adverbial phrases; 6) the use of adverbs to modify absolute superlative adjectives; 7) the use of adjectives functioning as adverbs; and 8) the use of adverbs requiring gender and number agreement. The results indicated that the majority of errors stemmed directly from a lack of proficiency in French (the learners’ second foreign language). Furthermore, some errors were attributed to interlingual interference from Thai (the native language) and English (the first foreign language).
