Problems of English-Thai Translation: A Case Study of Business English Students

Abstract
This research aims to investigate the translation problems of 67 third-year and fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in Business English, College of International Business, Rattana Bundit University. All the 67 students are asked to translate a short English paragraph consisting of 11 sentences into Thai. The data are analyzed and presented by frequency and percentage.
Based on the errors found in the translation, students tend to make more errors in lexical-level translation than in structure-level translation. The result shows that the top-three errors found in the lexical-level translation are mismatching words and their meanings (51.31%), using word repetition (12.91%), and mistranslating words (9.15%). According to the errors found in the structure-level translation, the top-three errors are using inappropriate connectives (40.41%), converting active and passive constructions (32.27%), and translating syntactic ambiguity (15.70%).
