INTEGRATED BUDDHIST APPROACHES TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN BUDDHIST SEMINARIES DURING THE AGE OF DISRUPTION

Abstract

This research aims to: 1) analyze the problems in English language instruction for Pariyatti Buddhist schools in the Disruption Era, 2) develop English language teaching strategies based on Buddhist-integrated principles for Pariyatti Buddhist schools in the Disruption Era, and 3) transmit these English teaching strategies rooted in Buddhist-integrated principles to such schools. The researchers employed a mixed-methodologies approach consisting of two phases. The findings revealed that: 1)The analysis of English language teaching problems in Pariyatti Buddhist schools during the Disruption Era indicated several key issues. These included an overemphasis on rote memorization rather than practical language use, a lack of social context that encourages English usage in daily life, grammar-focused instruction, and limitations in teaching technologies and instructional media. 2)The development of English teaching strategies based on Buddhist-integrated principles in the Disruption Era—particularly through the application of the "Sujjipuli" principle (a Buddhist approach to learning)—was rated at the highest level overall (x̄ = 4.57, SD = 0.75). 3) The results of implementing these strategies showed a statistically significant difference at the .05 level between pre-test and post-test scores, confirming the effectiveness of Buddhist-integrated teaching strategies for English language instruction in Pariyatti Buddhist schools during the Disruption Era.
