Abstract

This research aims to: 1) to study the forms and contents of sung music used in propagating Dhamma in Theravada Buddhism 2) to study the forms and contents of sung music used in propagating religious teachings in Roman Catholic Christianity, and 3) to comparatively analyze the methods of propagating religious teachings through sung music between Theravada Buddhism and Roman Catholic Christianity in the same area. This research employed a qualitative research methodology, related documents and research studies, as well as in-depth interviews with 20 purposively selected participants, including Buddhist monks, Catholic priests, Buddhists, and Christians. The findings revealed that: 1) Sung Music in Theravada Buddhism are characterized by flexibility and harmonious integration with local culture in both form and content. Their structures are relatively simple, their melodies are accessible, and they encourage active participation among members of the community. The content primarily focuses on communicating fundamental Buddhist teachings, including doing good, refraining from evil, the law of karma, heedfulness, and mental development. Consequently, religious songs serve as an important medium for moral education and the cultivation of faith at the community level. 2) Sung Music in Roman Catholic Christianity are characterized by systematic organization and clearly defined structures. They constitute an integral part of formal religious liturgy and encompass various forms, including traditional and contemporary hymns. Their content emphasizes the praise of God, the proclamation of divine love and human salvation, and the promotion of a way of life consistent with Christian teachings. 3) The comparison revealed that both religious traditions employ songs as a medium for disseminating religious teachings and fostering shared spiritual experiences. However, Theravada Buddhism tends to employ songs in a flexible manner, with greater emphasis on local community contexts, whereas Roman Catholic Christianity utilizes a more formalized and standardized system of musical organization and performance. These differences reflect the distinctive religious foundations, theological orientations, and structures of belief underlying the two traditions.
