Grade: the symbol and meaning in perspective of instructor and learner

Abstract
This article is intended to reflect the perspective of the instructor and the learner on the grade by using databases from journals, news and documents. Data analysis used a systematic analysis and presented a suitable grading approach according to the learning management plan. The analysis showed that the instructor had a perspective of grading as a symbol that was used to interpret quality and standards, to limit the number of grades that a learner could have and the used of discretion in three ways. 1) Grade was decreased to indicate standards and quality, 2) Grade was used for benefits, 3) Grade was used to improvement and development. In perspective of the learner, it is important that grading should focus on clear grading criteria. If the instructor or the person involved is unclear in policy formulation and practices, the learner may feel unjustified, limited and pressured into thinking and believing in his or her ability.
