The Process of Having Children of Gay Single Father: Knowledge Formation from Experience

Abstract

The objective of this research article was to study the conditions of gay who had the status of father in the context of Thai society. It was the qualitative research using the narrative study method. The informants in this research were the gay single fathers using a gatekeepers selection process with making the decision, selecting 15 people who met the inclusion criteria from all four regions of Thailand. The researcher used semi-structured interviews. Once the data was obtained, it was analyzed to create a narrative. The research results found that the conditions of gay men who were gay men that led to fatherhood status in the context of Thai society can be separated into 2 groups with 2 conditions: "groups who had children with intention" and "groups who had children without intention." Condition 1: It was the need to conceal your desires or true sexual orientation in hopes of having children according to social norms by ignoring the deep feelings in one’s heart. Condition 2: Due to various force majeure reasons, fathers must be responsible and comply with social norms in raising their children to be good members of society. Moreover, this study also revealed a new perspective to create awareness of gender diversity in society. Don't judge a book by its cover. It led to understanding and reducing the gay single father stigma and their family members to create a society that was happy and prosperous together.
