The Basical Characteristics of Thai Children based on Principles of the Four Brahmavihãra

Abstract
This academic article aims to explore the basical characteristics of Thai children based on the Four Brahmavihãra—loving-kindness (Metta), compassion (Karuna), sympathetic joy (Mudita), and equanimity (Upekkha). The study is based on a review of relevant literature and research concerning the promotion of desirable characteristics in Thai children through Buddhist principles. The findings reveal two main components: (1) the core component, which is the developmental process of the Four Brahmavihãra, comprising three stages: (1.1) Supporting factors—initial elements that encourage the cultivation of virtuous characteristics; (1.2) Methods—the practical application of the Four Brahmavihãra to develop moral discipline and suppress mental defilements, supported by the Four Sangahavatthu (principles of social solidarity); and (1.3) Outcomes—the development of basical characteristics in Thai children that contribute positively to the family, society, and the global community. (2) The secondary component, which is embedded within the core process, consists of two parts: (2.1) Internal characteristics—moral qualities derived from the Four Brahmavihãra, divided into two aspects: (a) interpersonal and material-related virtues, namely Metta, Karuna, and Mudita, and (b) principle-related virtue, namely Upekkha, with the Four Sangahavatthu serving as ethical guidelines for behavior; and (2.2) External characteristics—concepts and frameworks that guide the development of Thai children, including the National Education Act, the National Education Plan, and the Basic Education Core Curriculum. These external characteristics reflect societal expectations and educational directions.
