Abstract

This academic article aims to analyze the factors contributing to the growing popularity of lay persons in Dhamma dissemination within Thai society in the digital age. Through a synthesis of the Tipitaka, Atthakatha, Buddhist texts, communication theories, and related research and academic articles, both domestic and international, the study examines the relationships among the roles of lay persons, digital technology, and audience behavior in a contemporary social context. The findings reveal that the popularity of lay persons in Dhamma dissemination does not stem from the status of the disseminator per se, but rather from the integration of five key factors: (1) the credibility and personal experience of the disseminator, (2) the communication of Dhamma through accessible language connected to daily life, (3) the utilization of digital media and communication technology, (4) the responsiveness to the psychological needs of the audience, and (5) the fostering of interaction and learning communities through online platforms. These factors have enabled Dhamma dissemination to reach the public effectively, particularly working-age individuals and younger generations. The new body of knowledge generated from this study is the proposition of The Five-Factor Model of Lay Dhamma Communication (5F-LDC Model), which posits that the success of lay Dhamma dissemination results from a systemic interrelationship among the disseminator, content, technology, audience, and online community engagement. Nevertheless, although lay persons play an increasingly significant role in Dhamma dissemination, such communication should be grounded in doctrinal accuracy in accordance with the Dhamma-Vinaya, with proper citation of the Tipitaka and adherence to the four principles of Mahapadesa, in order to preserve the integrity of Buddhism in alignment with the contemporary digital social context in a sustainable manner.
