Abstract

The purposes of this research article were 1) to study the level of pronunciation skills of lower secondary school students with learning disabilities before using a package of Thai pronunciation practice activities; and 2) to compare pronunciation skills before and after using the said activity package. This research was a quasi-experimental study. The sample consisted of 8 lower secondary school students (Matthayom Suksa 1-3) with reading disabilities, specifically selected from Srinakharinwirot University Prasarnmit Demonstration School (Secondary). The research instruments included 1) a package of basic flashcards; 2) 5 individualized instructional plans; and 3) pre- and post-tests to measure pronunciation skills, which had been validated for content validity and reliability by experts. The learning activities were conducted twice a week for 5 weeks. The research findings showed that 1) before using the activity package, students had an average pronunciation skill score of 9.25 out of a possible 20 points, representing 46.25%, reflecting that students still had problems with word reading, pronunciation, pauses, and fluency in reading; 2) after using the activity package, students' average scores increased to 15.00 points, equivalent to 75.00% of the total score, which was statistically significantly higher than their pre-test scores. In addition, students showed improvement in reading accuracy, pauses, rhythm, intonation, and fluency, as well as increased enthusiasm, confidence, and assertiveness in reading. In conclusion, the Thai reading aloud practice activity package was effective in developing the pronunciation skills of students with learning disabilities, both in terms of academic achievement and learning behavior.
