Phenomenon Analysis of Social Movements for Urban Conservation

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of social movements for urban conservation, with a focus on responding to the 4 main questions: 1) factors contributing to the movement formation 2) participants in the movement 3) urban conservation strategies and 4) facilities for community conservation. By studying the case of social movements for urban conservation in the Bangkok area, the data was analyzed the common points of the issue in each phenomenon. From the study, it was found that 1) factors contributing to the formation of movement consist of the following main factors. The impact on the lives of the community residents, the loss of economic benefits, and the loss of architectural heritage. Other additional factors include the important of the area , urban development plan and policies, conservation trends and nostalgia for the past as well as the degradation of the area’s utilization 2) Participants in the movement include: community groups landowners government agencies organizations or private sectors and scholars 3) strategies for urban conservation include: resistance to authorities negotiation through normal political channels presentation of urban identities finding partners to support the movement             use of media and academic forums to support the issues propose alternative solutions for urban development and dependence on royal institutions and 4) facilities for community conservation include:the landowners/landlords’perspectives on urban conservation community organization management support from alliances or partners and use of media to enhance operational capabilities. These findings can provide a guidance for those who are interested in studying urban conservation issues to understand another aspect of the phenomenon.
