Cultural dynamics of preserving traditional pottery wisdom through the participation of local communities. Ban San Sai Community, Sri Dong Yen Subdistrict, Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract

This research aims to: 1) study the history of traditional pottery production in the community, 2) compile and systematize knowledge on traditional pottery production, and 3)identify strategies to promote the wisdom of pottery production through community participation. The study focused on a purposive sample of 11 representatives from the pottery producers of Ban San Sai, Si Dong Yen Subdistrict, Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai Province. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed descriptively to address the research objectives.

The findings include 1) History of Traditional Pottery Production: The traditional pottery wisdom of Ban San Sai has a long-standing history dating back to 1897, passed down through generations from the Ban Han Kaeo and Ban Wua Lai communities, 2) Systematization of Pottery Production Knowledge: Traditional production methods remain central, but adaptations to globalization have led to the integration of labor-saving technologies to enhance the production process, and 3) Promotion of Pottery Wisdom: Strategies include establishing learning centers, disseminating information through online platforms, and inviting interested individuals to engage with and learn about traditional pottery. These initiatives aim to preserve and promote Ban San Sai’s traditional pottery wisdom, expand its market reach, and increase the value of community resources.
