DEVELOPMENT IN SCIENCE PRACTICE SKILL AND ANALYTICAL ABILITY OF GRADE 4 STUDENTS THROUGH THE PREDICT-OBSERVE-EXPLAIN (POE) LEARNING MODEL
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objectives of this research were: 1) to develop science practice skill of grade 4 students through the Predict-Observe-Explain Model so that the students made an achievement score of 70% or above and at least 70% of the sample group passed the criterion; 2) to study analytical ability of grade 4 students through the Predict-Observe-Explain Model so that the students made a mean achievement score of 70% or above and at least 70% of the sample group passed the criterion; and 3) to study the satisfaction of grade 4 students through the Predict-Observe-Explain Model. The target group was selected through purposively sampling that consisted of 15 of grade 4 students studying in the first semester of the 2020 academic year at Ban Mon School under the Office of Chaiyaphum Primary Education Service Area 2. The research used Pre Experimental Research Design with the One-Shot Case Study. Research instruments of this research included: 1) a unit of learning management plan including six lesson plans with 2 hours each through Predict-Observe-Explain Model (POE); 2) an assessment form of science practice skill of grade 4 students including 4 skills: (1) prediction, (2) observation, (3) classification, and (4) conclusion from data based on the 4-level rubrics scoring table, 3) 30 items of objective test with 4-choice on analytical thinking ability; and 4) a questionnaire of satisfaction in 5 components including: (1) the teacher, (2) the subject content in learning activities, (3) the instructional media, (4) the measurement and evaluation; and (5) the skills and benefits to be attained by the students. The questionnaire included 20 items with 5 rating level. The data were analyzed by basic statistics including percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. Findings of this research were as follows. 1) The students made a mean achievement score in science practice skill of 3.46 or 86.61% and 15 students or 100% of the sample group passed the criterion that was higher than the prescribed criterion. 2) The students made a mean achievement score in analytical thinking ability at 22.60 out of 30 or 75.33% and 13 out of 15 students or 86.67% of the sample group passed the criterion. Their achievement was higher than the prescribed criterion. 3) The overall satisfaction of students through the Predict-Observe-Explain learning activities was at the highest level ( = 4.86, S.D. = 0.31) that could be chronologically arranged by aspect as follows: teacher’s satisfaction was at the highest level ( = 4.95, S.D. = 0.17), followed by measurement and evaluation at the highest level ( = 4.89, S.D. =0.24), and the third one was the content and learning activities at the highest level ( = 4.85, S.D. 0.36).
