DEVELOPMENT IN ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL FOR GRADE 5 STUDENTS THROUGH SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING

Abstract
The objectives of this research were as follows: 1) to develop English speaking skill of grade 5 students through simulation-based learning in order that the students made a mean achievement score of 70% or higher and at least 70% of the students passed the criterion; and 2) to study opinions of the students on simulation-based learning activities. The target group of this research was 10 of grade 5 students studying in the first semester of the 2020 academic year of Meechai Wittaya Municipal School No. 5 under the Office of Education, Nongkai Municipality. The sample was purposively selected. The study used a Pre-Experimental Research model based on the One-Group Posttest Only Design. The research instruments included: 1) 12 learning management plans through simulation-based learning; 2) English speaking skill assessment form; 3) a questionnaire for eliciting opinions of grade 5 students on simulation-based learning. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and content analysis. Statistics used for data analysis included percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. Findings of this research were as follows. 1) The students made a mean achievement score of English speaking skill through simulation-based learning at 19.60 out of 24 or 81.67 percent and 8 students or 89.06 percent that passed the prescribed criterion. 2) The students stated their opinions from the highest to the lowest mean scores as follows: measurement and evaluation at 4.45 with S.D. 0.60 and 89.00 percent; followed by roles of teachers at 4.33 with S.D. 0.66 and 86.50 percent; and the lowest mean score was the desirable attributes at 4.23 with S.D. 0.55 and 84.50 percent.
