A STUDAY OF THE ROYAL BARGE PROCESSION IN VARIOUS PERIODS

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the Royal Barge procession in various periods. The instrument used in the research included a document analysis recording form. The research used content analysis and presented in a descriptive form. The research found that there was no clear evidence of the organization of the Royal Barge procession in the Sukhothai period. The document mentioned using a boat to float Krathongs or in the ceremony of the Brahman lantern procession in the middle of the river and the Candle festival on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month. During the Ayutthaya period, the Royal Barge procession was the Royal ceremony held for the King. His Majesty went to perform the Royal Kathin merit-making ceremony or donated the Kathin robe. During the Thonburi period, ceremonial boats were built for use in war. During the Rattanakosin period, the reigns of Rama 1-10, the King would graciously order the Royal Barge procession to travel privately or royally on various occasions such as the Royal Kathin robe offering ceremony and coronation ceremony. The organization of the Royal Barge procession during the early Rattanakosin period was arranged in the ancient style of the naval procession. As for the late Rattanakosin period, there were 2 processions namely the grand Royal Barge procession and the small Royal Barge procession.
