Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare the similarity and the difference of chromaticism usages between the first movement of Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 and of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, based in three aspects of analysis: Melodies and Motives analysis, Harmonic analysis and Chromatic Fourth analysis. From this study, it is found out that chromatic melodies is found in Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, but not in Haydn’s Symphony No. 90. Chromatic harmonies characterize both pieces. However, in Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, chromatic harmonies appear more frequent in shorter passages with more variety of usage. The Modulations to remote keys occur in Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, but not in Haydn’s Symphony No. 90. And lastly, chromatic fourth is used more frequent in Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 than Mozart’s Symphony No.41.
