กระบวนการชาตินิยมเองส่งผลต่อผลงานประพันธ์ดนตรีโอเปร่า ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1800 การขับร้องประสานเสียงในโอเปร่าได้กลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์แบบใหม่ในอิตาลีและเยอรมนี เพลงขับร้องประสานเสียงที่ได้ยินกันในยุคนั้นเป็นเพลงที่สามารถปลุกความรู้สึกความรักชาติได้ ไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่ง ดังที่ปรากฎในเยอรมนีภายใต้การปกครองของฝรั่งเศส เช่น เพลงขับร้องประสานเสียงชายล้วน โอ แวลเช ลุสต์ เพลงขับร้องโดยนักโทษ จากเรื่อง พีเดลิโอ ผลงานลำดับที่ 72 องก์ 1 ฉาก 10 ค.ศ.1805 ของ ลุดวิก ฝาน เบโธเฟน หรือ วาส ไกลช์ต โวลเอาฟ์ เอร์เดน เพลงขับร้องประสานเสียงโดยเหล่านายพราน จากเรื่อง ไฟร์ชูตส์ องก์ 3 ฉาก 15 ค.ศ.1821 ของ คาร์ล มาเรีย ฟอน เวเบอร์
