Abstract

In the early 1900s, Brushes were created to make a softer drumming sound and usually found in jazz music. Brushes are used in the same way as drumsticks. Therefore, the playing techniques and practicing brushes are very similar to using drumsticks. Aside from using the same technique as a drum sticks, there is also the sweep technique, which is an important technique and characteristic in creating the unique sound. this article, is intended to be discussed on the principles and basics of using brushes by explaining on these following current characteristics of nowadays brushes, the method of using muscles to hold brushes, creating the sweep sound technique to match with the rhythms, using brushes in jazz swing style. Along with the steps to follow as well as how to practice plus the training exercises for a sweeping technic in a various rhythmic pattern.
