A CREATIVITY OF CHOREOGRAPHY FOR MARCHING BAND PERFORMANCE

Abstract

This research article aims to: 1) study the fundamentals of choreography based on ballet principles and 2) create body movements synchronized to music in marching band performances using qualitative research methods.
The research result found that 1) the study of basic choreography according to the principles of ballet involved examining the methods of the Royal Academy of Dance, UK. There are 6 basic movements that researcher found suitable for musicians who have to perform both music and dancing while carrying musical instrument. Those basic movements emphasizing on the movement of legs and feet that would not affect the sound quality and enhancing the musicians' posture during performance. and 2) The creativity of proper body movements to match the song for field performance as well as analyzing a song called Vimaya Deva have found that a section of its fourth act shares vivid similarity to Thai Northeastern musical rhythm. The researcher has an idea to choreograph body movement by adopting Northeastern folk dance called Serng. The movement involves the dancer to point one leg forward while having it afloat and bouncing his hip from side to side following music rhythm.
These movements quite similar to ballet basic foundation battements tendu. These movements fit the performance gesture that the sound outlet of instrument will face to audience. It will enhance the melody to standout from other sounds and it also helps improving the sound quality of performing melody as sound distortion would be minimal.
