The contemporary graphic creation from the decorations of venacular architectures in Nong Khai Province

Abstract

The research aimed to achieve the following objectives: 1) to examine the decorations of local architecture in Nong Khai Province, 2) to create contemporary graphics based on these decorations, and 3) to storage, distribution and experimentation contemporary graphics on an application prototype. The study employed a mixed research methodology using qualitative research from surveys, interviews and quantitative research method in measuring satisfaction with rating scales. The study demonstrated that 1) The decoration of local architecture in Nong Khai Province exhibit the presence of distinctive cultural influences, such as Lao Lan Xang, Local craftsmanship and colonial architecture. 2) The creation of graphic, drawing inspiration from architecture’s decoration in Nong Khai Province, is designed as an element of graphic art in the form of clip art. These elements of graphic are classified into the Di-cut image format that has a rough and unpolished appearance, the stroke and filled formats with freeform and flat shapes. 3) The production of application prototypes for storage, distribution and experimentation of graphics from user participation in design has made contemporary graphic arts in Nong Khai Province more diverse and flexible, with the highest level of overall user satisfaction (average 4.51).
