Gauge Block Surface Conditioning Machine for Educational Use

Abstract
This research has created gauge block surface conditioning machine, to be used in the process of removing defects that occur when using the surface of gauge blocks made of steel. The gauge block surface conditioning machine consists of three main parts: polishing head, machine frame and controller. This machine was tested by polishing five gauge blocks with surface damage. User feedback will be assessed through a five-level questionnaire to collect statistical results and interpret user satisfaction. The fringe inspection results at the interface between the optical flat and the gauge block indicated that the gauge block surface conditioning machine significantly reduced surface defects on the gauge block. We found that the defects were reduced by 1–2 fringes within 30 seconds, and no defects were observed on the tested gauge block. User satisfaction with machine was considered to be highly satisfactory.
