DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY READING SKILLS BY USING PHONICS FOR MATTAYOMSUKSA 2 STUDENTS

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to develop the phonics lesson plan to improve English vocabulary reading skills for Mattayomsuksa 2 students to meet the efficiency criterion (E1/E2) at 60/60, 2) to compare students’ English vocabulary reading skills before and after using phonics lesson plan, and 3) to investigate the students’ satisfaction towards instruction by using phonics lesson plan. The samples applying purposive sampling consisted of 34 Mattayomsuksa 2 students at Sritepprachasan School, Sritep, Phetchabun, 1 class, in 2019 academic year. The research instruments consisted of 1) phonics lesson plan to improve English vocabulary reading skills for Mattayomsuksa 2 students, 2) the evaluation of English vocabulary reading skills  before and after using phonics lesson plan and, 3 the evaluation of a satisfaction towards instruction by using phonics lesson plan. The research was conducted in 8 hours (1 hour a week) for 8 weeks. The mean, standard deviation, and t - test (Dependent Sample) were applied to analyze the data. The findings were as follows: 1. Phonics lesson plan to improve English vocabulary reading skills for Mattayomsuksa 2 students attained the efficiency criterion at 60.80/60.50, which was higher than the established requirement of 60/60.  2. The mean of English vocabulary reading skills posttest scores is higher than the mean of English vocabulary reading skills pretest scores in the significant level of 0.05  3. The samples showed the highest satisfaction level towards instruction by using phonics lesson plan to improve English vocabulary reading skills for Mattayomsuksa 2 students.
